Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a company’s commitment to manage the social, environmental and economic effects of its operations responsibly and in line with public expectations. The basic purpose of CSR is to give back to the community, take part in philanthropic causes and provide positive social value. Companies are increasingly turning to CSR to make a difference and build a positive brand around them. The various types of CSR are Environmental responsibility, Ethical responsibility, Philanthropic responsibility and Economic responsibility. 

Union Bank of India established in 1919 has grown over the years encompassing various activities. Many initiatives for social and economic upliftment were undertaken by the Bank. As a commercial bank the bank has earned from the people and as a caring organization is committed to its role as a responsible corporate entity not only by adopting ethical business practices but also contributing towards economic development beyond its statutory obligations. Bank fully realizes its social responsibility to improve the quality of life of the local community and society at large. Bank sets aside up to 1% of published net profits of previous year for undertaking donation/CSR activities.

With an objective of upliftment of the under privileged communities and to make significant improvement in the living standards of poor and marginalized & for managing its donation/CSR activities, the Bank created a Trust in the name of Union Bank Social Foundation (UBSFT) on 2nd March,2006. The major CSR activities of the Bank are being carried out/implemented through the UBSFT. The following are the broad sectors considered for extending support under CSR:


The objects of the UBSFT are to promote and assist, undertake and implement socio-economic development and such other welfare activities for the upliftment of the society on its own or by partnering with other development agencies/persons with reference to bettering the lives of the people including small and marginal farmers, landless laborers, rural artisans, physically challenged, women, children, socially and economically backward classes, downtrodden and such sections of the society. 


Since 2006, in line with the objects of the foundation several projects were approved under various sectors. The purpose of the projects clearly geared towards, Community Welfare, Education, Health Care, Human Resource Development, Girl Child & Women Empowerment, and Environment Protection. Union Bank Social Foundation showed its unflinching commitment to the objective of corporate social responsibility (CSR) by creating enablers for social and community development.  




The activities carried out by the UBSFT have created reasonably good impact on the targeted population and it has also raised the expectations of the public for implementation of similar projects in future.
